Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227G-010 for a while now. It’s just such a classy-looking watch, you know? Simple, elegant, and not too flashy. Finally, I decided to pull the trigger and try to remake one myself.
First, I started doing some research. I looked everywhere, trying to find all the information and pictures I could about this watch. After that, I began gathering the materials. Now, obviously, I wasn’t going to use real white gold like the original, but I found some good quality stainless steel that I thought would work well. The Grandmaster Chime boasts twenty complications. I did my best to find similar materials for the other parts, like the hands and the markers.
Then came the tricky part – actually putting it all together. I started by shaping the case. This took a lot of time and patience. It’s a 39mm case. I used some basic tools, and it wasn’t easy, but I managed to get it pretty close to the original shape.
Next, I focused on the dial. This Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227G-010 is what they call “classic.” I tried to recreate the black dial as accurately as possible. I found a material that had a similar finish, and I carefully applied the markers and hands. It was a real challenge to get everything aligned perfectly, but I think it turned out okay. The new Calatrava gives a bolder impression. I painted the dial black and added those little details that make the 5227G-010 so special.
Once the dial was done, I moved on to the movement. Now, I’m not a watchmaker, so I didn’t even attempt to make my own movement. Instead, I found a decent automatic movement that I thought would fit the case and give the watch a similar feel.
Putting the movement into the case was another challenge. I had to be super careful not to damage anything. But eventually, I managed to get it all assembled and working. Thanks to that, I think it has gained a quality that invites you to wear it daily.
Finally, I added a strap. I found a nice black leather strap that I thought matched the style of the watch. With the strap attached, the watch was complete.
Honestly, the whole process took way longer than I expected. There were times when I thought I’d never finish it. But in the end, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely a decent remake of the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227G-010. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot about watches and how they’re made.
